Mr.President，
NomanthihanIdoofthepatriotism，aswellasabilities，oftheverywentlemeaddressedtheHouse.Butdiffereehesamesubjedifferentlights；and，therefore，IhopethatitwilldisrespectfultothosegentlemeainingasIdo，opinionsofacharacterveryoppositetotheirs，Ishallspeakforthmysesfreelyandwithoutreserve.Thisisnotimefory.ThequestioheHouseisoneofawfulmomenttothistry.FormyownpartIsideritashaionoffreedomorslavery；andinproportioudeofthesubjectoughttobethefreedomofthedebate.Itisonlyinthiswaythatetoarriveattruth，andfulfillthegreatresponsibilitywhichweholdtoGodandourtry.ShouldIkeepbaionsatsuchatime，thrivingoffence，Ishouldyselfasguiltyoftreasontowardsmytry，andofanactofdisloyaltytowardsthemajestyofheaven，whichIrevereaboveallearthlykings.
Mr.President，itisnaturaltomantoiheillusionsofhope.ttainstapainfultruth，ahesongofthatSiren，tillshetransformsusis.Isthisthepartofwisemen，engagediandarduleforliberty？Arewedisposedtobeofthehosewho，havi，andhavingears，hearhingswhiearlytheirtemporalsalvation？Formypart，whateveranguishofspirititmaywillingtokruth；tokandtoprovideforit.
Ihavebutonelampbywhichmyfeetareguided；andthatisthelampofexperienowofnowayofjudgiurebutbythepast.Andjudgi，IwishtoknowwhattherehasbeeoftheBritishministryforthelastteojustifythosehopeswithwhitlemenhavebeeosolacethemselvesandtheHouse？Isitthatinsidioussmilewithwhichourpetitioelyreceived？Trustitnot，sir；itwillproveasoyourfeet.Sufferobetraywithakiss.Askyourselfhowthisgraciousreofourpetitionportswiththesereparations，whichcoverourwatersanddarkenourlasandarmiesoaworkofloveaion？Haveweshownourselvessounwillingtobereciled，thatforcemustbetowinbackourlove？Letusnotdeceiveourselves，sir.Thesearetheimplementsofwarandsubjugatioargumentstowhigsresort.Iaskgentlemen，sir，whatmeansthismartialarray，ifitspurposebenottoforissiolemenassignanyotherpossiblemotivesforit？HasGreatBritaihisquarteroftheworld，tocallforallthisacofnaviesandarmies？No，sir，shehasheyaremeantforus；theybemeantforheyareseobindauponusthoseswhichtheBritishministryhavebeens.Andwhathavewetoopposetothem？Shallwetryargument？Sir，wehavebeentryingthatforthelasttenyears.Haveweaooffero？Nothing.Wehaveheldthesubjeeverylightofwhichitiscapable；butithasbeenallinvain.Shallweresorttoeyandhumblesuppli？Whattermsshallwefindwhiotbeenalreadyexhausted？Letusnot，Ibeseechyou，sir，deceiveourselveslonger.Sir，wehavedthatcouldbedoormwhiiitioned；wehaveremonstrated；licated；rostratedourselvesbeforethethrone，andhaveimploreditsiioyrannidsoftheministryandParliameioed；ourremonstrancehaveproducedadditionalviolensult；oursupplishavebeendisregarded；andwehavebeehpt，fromthefootofthethrone.Invaihings，mayweihefondhopeofpeadre.Thereisnolongeranyroomforhope.Ifwewishtobefree—ifreserveihoseiimableprivilegesforwhichwehavebeensolongg—ifwemeaoabaruggleinwhichwehavebeensolongengaged，andwhichledgedourselvesoabandonuntilthegloriousobjectofourtestshallbeobtaifight！
